We are what we eat. The food we daily take has its effect on our psychology. You might have heard this phrase before, but have you ever really thought about what it means?

Most of us know that nutrition influences our overall health. Yet, we are ignorant about the connection between what we eat and how it influences functioning of our body and mind.

Key to a tickling brain is good food, more specifically vitamins. Wholesome, nourishing food actually helps us learn things faster and react more quickly. In fact, for school children it is critical to be more alert and active because there are new skills to be learnt every day.

Studies have shown how a lack of vitamins in the diet can alter the size of brain cells and the growth of neurotransmitters, the brain’s communication network, resulting in depressive mood and pessimistic outlook in life. Vitamin B complex, for example, affects the cognitive processes of the brain. Vitamins are abundantly found in fruits and vegetables. Therefore, eat lot of fruits, vegetables, nuts, sprouts, honey in order o have healthy mind in a healthy body.

Several studies have shown that saturated fats interfere with the brain’s efficiency.

Many studies have shown that antioxidants such as vitamin A, E and C reduce the cell damage in the brain caused by free radicals. Try to get vitamins from natural sources such as carrots, broccoli, nuts, green leafy vegetables. A Tufts University study found that anthocyanins found in strawberries, grapes, red cabbage and plums protect the neurons’ ability to respond the chemical messages.

They also prevent the formation of blood clots, which keeps the brain supplied with ample amounts of oxygenated blood. About 20% of oxygenated blood from the heart goes to the brain. Lack of blood can cause forgetfulness resulting in anger and depression.

The brain deploys a large number of bio-chemicals which act as neurotransmitters, i.e., they stimulate neighbouring neurons, faciliatating the passage of impulses from one cell to the next throughout the nervous system.

Of the few chemicals identified, one is serotonin, whose functions include sleep regulation and anxiety reduction. Scientists now know of the ill effects when the brain suffers a nutritional deficiency of any of these chemicals. And, it is possible to boost alertness, memory and stress resistance in the nutritionally deprived.

The good news is that, within fes years, scientists will learn how to modify people’s diets to fit their genes and thereby building strong bodies and healthy mind.

Unlike drugs, the effect of foods on mind is slow but sure. Drugs come as refined compounds and are administered in specific doses that have relatively short acting effects. The effect of foods, on the other hand, are slow and often take years before becoming visible. Wrong food is responsible for all the diseases of body and mind, which leads to violence and crime in personal life and war among nations. Mind is concretion of food particles. As is our food, so will be our mind, intellect and behaviour. As will be our mind, so will be our character and so will be our attitude towards others. Change your food habits to change the world.
